Your guide to understanding Men's Skin

There’s a revolution underway in the world of male skincare with an increasing awareness amongst men that in addition to their physical and emotional wellbeing, the importance of skin health is a priority, and everyone deserves great skincare. It’s not just about aesthetics either, your skin is the largest organ of your body, acting as a barrier against environmental stresses so it’s important that everyone has skincare products to suit their needs. We’ve created an educational guide to men's skincare highlighting the unique characteristics and lifestyle habits with easy-to-follow tips and solutions for healthy skin.

What are the most common characteristic unique to men?

  • Thicker Skin: Men's skin is about 25% thicker than women's due to higher levels of testosterone, collagen and elastin. This can make men's skin more resilient, prone to oiliness and cause it to age differently.
  • More Sebum Production: Men tend to have more active sebaceous glands, leading to oilier skin and a greater likelihood of acne and enlarged pores. As a result, the pH level is lower than female skin which can also lead to impurities and acne.
  • Facial Hair: Regular shaving can remove the upper layers of skin leaving it sensitive and vulnerable to irritation, ingrown hairs, dryness and external stresses. Some of the most common skin concerns for men are related to shaving!
  • Ageing: Although men tend to show the signs of ageing at a later stage than women, once they occur, lines and wrinkles appear more rapidly and more prominent.

What steps can men take to improve their skin health and appearance?

A comprehensive skin regime doesn’t need to be lengthy or require a complicated number of products.  These simple steps will ensure your skin feels calm, soothed and looking healthy.

  • Look for products that contain ingredients such as glycolic acid to exfoliate thicker skin and to help to prevent ingrowing hairs. Niacinamide will help to reduce breakouts and the appearance of pores whilst balancing oil production.
  • Apply hydrating actives that support immediate and long-term moisture levels and prevent trans epidermal water loss to combat the appearance of lines, wrinkles and slackening.
  • Always shave with the grain and use a sharp razor to avoid razor burn and bumps. Invest in a lightweight, soothing post-shave treatment to calm irritation and redness.
  • Defend from environmental stresses with formulas rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
  • Apply a daily SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays and prevent pigmentation.
  • Support your skin’s natural barrier to keep skin healthy and less prone to irritation.

At what age should men start a skincare regime?

Ideally, a good cleansing and moisturising regime is best introduced in your early teens but it’s never too late to start!  Visible improvements can be made at any age and we would most certainly suggest a good core routine from mid-twenties onwards to help support the natural skin barrier and to prevent the signs of ageing.

What products should I include in a men’s skincare regime?

Good grooming products for men should include a cleanser to balance oil production, a moisturiser to support the skin barrier and for those in mid-thirties, we suggest an eye cream to reduce the signs of fatigue.  In addition and as with any skin care regime, a broad-spectrum SPF should be applied every day.
